Bringing you our best: Three M Health Fairview hospitals named among top 10 in Minnesota

When you need a hospital, you want the best. M Health Fairview is dedicated to providing exceptional care for all Minnesotans. We’re excited to announce that three of our hospitals were ranked among the top 10 in the state on U.S. News & World Report’s 2023-24 Best Hospitals list.

M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital, Southdale Hospital, and University of Minnesota Medical Center were named among the 10 best hospitals in Minnesota, while Southdale and the medical center were also ranked among the top five hospitals in the Twin Cities.

M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center is the only nationally ranked hospital for specialty care in the Twin Cities; ranked #37 in the nation for Cancer Care and #40 in the nation for Ear, Nose, and Throat (Otolaryngology) Care by U.S. News & World Report. It was also named “High Performing” in Gastroenterology and GI Care.

Our health system’s results show a steady improvement over last year. This is the second year in a row that our medical center has been recognized among the top 50 nationwide for Cancer Care; last year it ranked #45 in the nation. It’s been named among the 10 best hospitals in Minnesota for the last three years running, coming in at #3 in the Twin Cities last year. Ridges Hospital was named among the top 10 both statewide and in the metro for the first time in recent history; while Southdale Hospital's regional rankings have also risen over the past year. 

The rankings are based on objective measurements including patient satisfaction scores, hospital volume, quality of nursing, and risk-adjusted survival and discharge-to-home rates. To determine national recognition, U.S. News & World Report evaluated more than 4,500 hospitals across 15 adult care specialties – ranging from cancer care to urology. This year, just over 160 of the hospitals evaluated received a national specialty ranking.

“This is an incredible recognition of the work our care teams do every day to provide breakthrough treatment right here in Minnesota,” said Mary Johnson, president and chief operating officer of M Health Fairview service lines. “We’re proud to be able to offer this level of care to people throughout our state and our region.”

U.S. News & World Report also evaluated the performance of more than 4,300 hospitals across 21 common procedures and conditions, such as diabetes care, hip replacement surgery, and heart attack treatment. Six of our hospitals were recognized for their high performance in specific procedures and conditions this year.

In addition to our performance on this year’s “Best Hospitals” list, our customer experience and patient safety scores are at their highest levels in our organization’s recent history.
