Expanding infusion services meets growing needs with safety, expertise, and efficiency
As demand for infusion therapies continues to rise, M Health Fairview is expanding services to improve access for patients, and redesigning spaces to better support the care teams who deliver these complex treatments every day.
Infusion medications are delivered directly into the bloodstream through an IV. These treatments can help manage cancer, immune conditions, and other diseases. Patients may also need blood transfusions or IV fluids to support them through their care journey. Infusion times vary widely, some take as little as 30 minutes, which others can last several hours.
An underused space at M Health Fairview Clinics and Surgery Center (CSC) in Minneapolis underwent a thoughtful renovation to provide additional infusion space.
The infusion center expansion includes:
- An additional 13 infusion chairs
- A reconfigured, contiguous lab draw area.
- A new onsite satellite blood bank.
- An expanded footprint for the Infusion Pharmacy.
Why infusion demand is increasing
Over the past several years, the need for infusion services has continued to grow. Advances in medical science have led to the development of new and innovative therapies, including treatments for conditions that previously had limited or no options available. As a result, more patients are benefiting from therapies that can improve outcomes and quality of life.
Along with new medications and novel therapies, the way care is delivered has also evolved. Many treatments that once required a hospital stay are now safely provided in outpatient infusion centers. In some cases, care has shifted even further, allowing patients to receive treatment at home or to self‑administer medications when appropriate. These changes are designed to make care more convenient, comfortable, and accessible while maintaining the highest standards of safety.
To support this growth and ensure timely, patient-centered care, we have made important investments, including the addition of an on-site blood bank. This enhancement has significantly improved turnaround times for blood products, allowing patients to receive the care they need in a much shorter time frame than previously possible. Increased access for same-day needs means patients can now have their labs drawn and receive the necessary blood products conveniently in one location.
These improvements reflect our continued commitment to providing safe, efficient, and patient‑centered care. As treatments continue to advance, we remain focused on adapting our services to meet the evolving needs of our patients, today and in the future.
What to know about infusion services
Before any infusion can be scheduled, a provider’s order is required. Our care team works behind the scenes to make sure everything is safe, ready, and approved by your insurance before your infusion is given.
This includes:
- Pharmacist review of the treatment plan for drug interactions and safe dosing
- Nursing review to plan safe administration
- Insurance authorization to prevent unexpected costs
- Verification that medication is available and prepared for each specific patient
These steps are completed for every patient appointment.
A commitment to our patients
While the CSC expansion does not solve all access challenges, it meaningfully improves the patient journey and is an example of the M Health Fairview commitment to ensure that every patient receives safe, high-quality care.
