Five of our hospitals receive national recognition for maternity care, the most of any system statewide
Nationally recognized pregnancy and childbirth care, right in your backyard. This week, five of our hospitals were recognized as 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals for Maternity, the most of any health system in Minnesota.
U.S. News & World Report launched the “Best Hospitals for Maternity” list last year. It is designed to help families make informed choices about hospitals where they might have a baby following an uncomplicated pregnancy. This year, U.S. News & World Report evaluated nearly 650 hospitals across the nation. Of those, 297 were awarded the distinction of “High Performing.”
The five locations in our health system to receive this distinction are:
- The Birthplace at M Health Fairview Northland Medical Center
- The Birthplace at M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital
- The Birthplace at M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital
- The Birthplace at M Health Fairview Woodwinds Hospital
- Women’s Health and Birth Center - Grand Itasca Hospital
Our health system has nine birth centers across Minnesota with a variety of amenities, birthing techniques, and a comprehensive range of specialized care – including access to maternal-fetal medicine and neonatal care for those needing the highest level of support.

To compile the rankings, U.S. News considered three performance measures, including the Cesarean birth rate in low-risk pregnancies, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, and the rate of unexpected complications in term newborns. U.S. News also reviewed quality measures available from other sources.
“We never lose sight of the fact that each pregnancy is unique,” said Dan Landers, MD, a maternal-fetal medicine physician with M Health Fairview and co-chief of our women’s and children’s service line. “This recognition is a testament to the compassionate, personalized care offered by our experienced teams.”
