Five things to know about M Health Fairview Birthplaces

Our community Birthplaces are here to support you through every step of pregnancy and childbirth.

With nine locations across the state, they provide family-centered, leading-edge care close to home. And if complications arise, patients have access to a full range of specialists on-site and through The Birthplace at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital, a Level IV NICU and one of the nation’s leading birth centers.

Our Birthplaces are located across Minnesota for easy access to the care your family needs.

Our health system has nine Birthplaces across Minnesota, ranging from Hibbing to Burnsville. Each is staffed by a range of experts, including OB/GYNs, family medicine physicians, certified nurse midwives and – in some locations – volunteer doulas so that you get the right combination of care.

Our Birthplaces are located at:

Three of our Birthplaces offer a Level III NICU on-site. Located at Ridges, Southdale, and St. John’s Hospitals, these NICUs can provide continuous life support, critical medical care, and surgical care. Woodwinds Hospital has a Level II Special Care Nursery, which can provide extra support to newborns before they are moved to a NICU, when they are on their way home from a NICU, or if they are born after 32 weeks but in stable condition.

If you need the highest level of support, we also have a Level IV NICU available at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital – but more on that later.

Even if a Birthplace doesn’t have a NICU onsite, expert help is always close at hand. All our Birthplaces have 24/7 in-person or virtual access to on-call specialists.

We have a wide range of services and amenities to meet your needs from conception to delivery.

Choosing how and where to deliver a baby can be a difficult decision. Our Birthplaces provide a variety of supports to ensure you have the safest and most comfortable birth experience possible. We know that outstanding medical care is only one part of the puzzle. We offer a variety of other resources for families to utilize during pregnancy and birth.

Private doulas are welcome at all Birthplace locations. Doulas are trained professionals who provide emotional and physical support through pregnancy and birth. The Birthplace at M Health Fairview Woodwinds Hospital also offers a doula program, providing in-house access to doulas.

During labor, we also offer a variety of pain relief options for patients to choose from. These include:

  • Labor support
  • Clinical aromatherapy
  • Hydrotherapy—laboring in water for pain relief
  • Birthing balls, peanut balls, and slings to assist labor
  • Nitrous oxide
  • Epidural blocks
  • IV pain medication
Finally, our Birthplaces provide culturally sensitive care options. For example, nutrition staff at M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital provide the ingredients for a chicken and rice soup to Hmong patients after birth, in observance of a tradition in Hmong culture to eat only this soup for 30 days after giving birth.
