Four questions about health equity with HOPE Commissioner Chris Warlick

Urologist Chris Warlick, MD, PhD, shares his perspective on the progress the HOPE Commission has made dismantling discrimination in healthcare, and the work left to do.

Last year, M Health Fairview launched the HOPE Commission, a group dedicated to dismantling racial and gender discrimination in healthcare.

Urologist Christopher Warlick, MD, PhD, Department Head for the Department of Urology and Associate Professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School, is one of three HOPE Commissioners. We asked Warlick and his fellow HOPE Commissioners to tell us more about the work that’s taken place so far and what’s ahead in our effort to drive more equitable outcomes and inclusive environments and experiences for our patients, employees, and communities.

What energizes you about this work and what we’re building together?

“The most exciting part of it is that it feels like we have an opportunity to make real change. There have clearly been efforts in the past to improve diversity, equity and inclusion, but what feels different now is that the efforts appear to be coordinated and synchronous. By virtue of the existence of the HOPE Commission that is working across all three of our organizations, we have a level of synergy that I don't think we've had before. It feels like real change is possible and those opportunities don't come along all the time.”

Can you speak on the importance of listening to the community?
