M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital earns national patient safety award for 8th consecutive year

M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital has been recognized as a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ recipient by Healthgrades, a popular platform that Americans use when searching for a trusted doctor or hospital. This achievement puts Ridges in the top 10% of U.S. hospitals for patient safety, marking its eighth consecutive year (2018-2025) receiving this national recognition.

Ridges is one of just seven hospitals in the state to receive the award, but it is the only Minnesota hospital to have earned the honor eight years running. The honor reflects the hospital’s sustained commitment to delivering safe, patient-centered care. In addition to its recognition for patient safety, Ridges is ranked No. 5 in Minnesota for pulmonary care, and No. 2 in the state for cardiology by Healthgrades – further underscoring its commitment to high-quality, compassionate care.

“This recognition reflects the extraordinary teamwork happening every day at Ridges Hospital,” said Jenna Virant, RN, vice president of patient care and chief nursing officer at Ridges. “From our environmental services staff and nurses to our therapists, techs, and surgeons – every single person plays a role in creating a safe environment for our patients. It takes all of us, working together, to make this level of care possible.”

Ridges Hospital’s achievements are based on what matters most: patient outcomes. To determine top-performing hospitals for patient safety, Healthgrades evaluated risk-adjusted complication and mortality rates for approximately 4,500 hospitals nationwide. The annual study found that patients treated in hospitals that received the 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award, such as Ridges, are:

  • 54% less likely to experience in-hospital falls resulting in fracture.
  • 55% less likely to have a collapsed lung due to a procedure or surgery in or around the chest.
  • 69% less likely to experience pressure sores or bed sores acquired in the hospital.
  • 72% less likely to have catheter-related bloodstream infections acquired in the hospital.

“As a 2025 Patient Safety Excellence Award recipient, Ridges Hospital consistently puts the well-being of their patients and staff at the forefront, setting a high standard for patient safety nationwide,” said Debra Gradick, MD, FACEP, senior physician consultant at Healthgrades. “We commend Ridges Hospital for providing consistently exceptional care while preventing serious injuries, giving patients their best chance of a seamless recovery.”

Located in Burnsville, Minn., M Health Fairview Ridges Hospital has provided comprehensive care for southern Twin Cities communities since 1984, including cardiac, emergency, ICU, and neonatal intensive care. Ridges Hospital achieved a top 10 ranking in Minnesota on the U.S. News & World Report 2024 Best Hospitals list. It also earned eight high-performing ratings for congestive heart failure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, colon cancer surgery, heart attack, kidney failure, leukemia/lymphoma/myeloma, pneumonia, and stroke.
