M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital ranked No. 1 in the Twin Cities for cardiology in 2025

Four years after moving to Maplewood, the M Health Fairview St. John’s Hospital heart care program has claimed the top spot for cardiology in the Twin Cities in 2025 from Healthgrades.

The team at St. John’s was recognized among the top 10% of cardiac specialty programs in the country by HealthGrades, and was awarded the 2025 Coronary Intervention Excellence Award. St. John’s is also a five-star recipient for treatment of heart failure.

In 2021, the award-winning cardiology program from the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in St. Paul relocated to St. John’s Hospital. The move was an opportunity to expand the program and offer even more heart care services in the Twin Cities East Metro and Western Wisconsin.

The move combined experienced doctors, nurses, and more medical professionals with new technology, including state-of-the-art cardiac catheterization labs, two electrophysiology labs, and a hybrid catheterization lab for advanced cardiology procedures. St. John’s now offers the full continuum of heart care, from preventive and cardiac wellness services to medical and surgical management of heart disorders. With catheter-based procedures, repairs that once required open-heart surgery are now done with minimally invasive techniques that can reduce recovery time by weeks.

“St. John’s is home to a close-knit team of specialists who pulled together to build a program that can support any heart care need, simple or complex,” said Katie Nelson, service line executive for heart and vascular care. “Through the team’s exceptional teamwork, they overcame the challenge of moving to a new location and building a heart care program that they're proud of and we at M Health Fairview are proud of. We’re excited that Healthgrades noticed as well.”

“Our cardiology team is focused on delivering exceptional care to patients in our community,” said Will Nicholson, MD, vice president of medical affairs at St. John’s. “That means top quality, full-spectrum cardiology care is now available closer to home for everybody here in the east metro area.”

The Heart Care program at St. John’s is the same team that had long been recognized for excellence in cardiac surgery at St. Joseph’s Hospital. It was ranked “high performing” – the highest possible designation – for both aortic valve surgery and cardiac bypass surgery in 2020 by U.S. News and World Report.

More recognition for cardiology care

St. John’s isn’t the only hospital in our system to earn Healthgrades recognition in 2025.

“Our cardiology experts are ready and available whenever they’re needed in convenient locations across the metro area,” Nelson said. “They treat each patient as an individual and deliver the best, tailored care possible."
