Meet our Masonic Mission Award winners, honored for providing exceptional care to children and families

Our employees work to make M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital a home away from home for patients and their families. Inspired by the exemplary care delivered at our hospital, Minnesota Masonic Charities helped us create the Masonic Mission Awards Program to recognize faculty, staff members, and volunteers who show an exceptional commitment to providing world-class, compassionate care.

Following a two-and-a-half-year hiatus due to the pandemic, we were thrilled to celebrate the more than 70 nominees and 15 Masonic Mission Award recipients from 2021 and 2022 during a ceremony held on Oct. 25 at our hospital. Each recipient was nominated by a grateful family in recognition of the exceptional care they provided, then selected for the award by a panel of hospital leaders.

We were grateful to gather alongside leaders of Minnesota Masonic Charities and the University of Minnesota Foundation to honor the recipients and the many families who played a key role in this special recognition ceremony.

Hannah Schiro, CCLS

Child-family life specialist

Hannah Schiro, CCLS, was recognized for her work with Haley Crain, a young patient who underwent a blood and marrow transplant as part of her cancer treatment and had anxiety about returning to the hospital for checkups. Haley’s mother, Beth, called the Katie Hageboeck Children's Cancer Research Fund Clinic at Masonic Children’s Hospital and was connected with Schiro, who provided advice to prepare for their upcoming visit and mailed educational materials for them to explore at home, including some common medical supplies that Haley might find in the hospital.

“Items like the tourniquet for a blood draw weren't as scary when ‘playing’ with them in the comfort of our house,” said Beth. “Haley and her sister took turns giving each other pretend blood draws and shots. It was so magical to see Hannah's expertise at work in our home.”
