Six of our hospitals nationally recognized for high-quality pregnancy and childbirth care

Give your baby a strong start at The Birthplace at M Health Fairview.

This week, six of our hospitals were recognized as “High Performing” on U.S. News & World Report's 2024 Best Hospitals for Maternity list. For the second consecutive year, more of our hospital-based birth centers earned this distinction than any other health system in Minnesota.

The Best Hospitals for Maternity list is designed to help families identify hospitals that provide high-quality care for uncomplicated pregnancies and births. This year, U.S. News & World Report evaluated nearly 680 hospitals across the nation. Of those, only 311 were awarded the distinction of “High Performing.”

M Health Fairview and Fairview locations honored this year include:

Our safe and comfortable Birthplaces and birth centers are filled with family-friendly amenities and offer the latest birthing options and technology. They are staffed by a range of experienced and compassionate providers – including OB/GYNs, certified nurse midwives, family medicine obstetric physicians, lactation specialists, and many more. And if complications arise, rest easy knowing that you and your baby will have access to a full range of advanced care options, including neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), maternal-fetal medicine specialists, and nationally recognized pediatric care.

“We strive to provide personalized and inclusive care for all our patients and families,” said Andrea Kucera, RN-BC, nursing director for The Birthplace at M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital. “Our team at Southdale delivers thousands of babies every year, yet we listen to each patient’s unique needs and put each family first, supporting and empowering them. This honor reflects our consistent excellence and patient-centered mindset.”

To compile the rankings, U.S. News considered eight performance measures, including the Cesarean delivery rate in lower-risk pregnancies, early elective delivery rates, exclusive breast milk feeding rates, and the rate of unexpected complications in term newborns, among other factors.

“We are thankful for this recognition honoring the amazing work of our teams,” said Christina Haupt, service line senior director, women’s services. “We are lucky to have many compassionate, dedicated, and brilliant people working at each of the nine Birthplaces and birth centers across our health system. Our teams are focused on working together every day to create a safe and comfortable environment, while providing evidence-based care tailored to the unique needs of each person and family.
