Visitor restrictions at M Health Fairview clinics and hospitals
To protect our patients from the flu, COVID-19, and other common or seasonal illnesses, M Health Fairview locations maintain visitor restrictions year-round. View a list of our locations here.
HOSPITAL AND CLINIC VISITOR RESTRICTIONS
For everyone's safety, a limited number of visitors are allowed at M Health Fairview hospitals and clinics. In special circumstances, some extra accommodations can be made for families. See guidelines below.
We understand these measures may be difficult for our patients and families. Our top priority is to protect the health and safety of the people under our care. Patients are encouraged to work with their care team to find other ways to connect with loved ones.
- People who are sick or showing symptoms of COVID-19 or the flu are not allowed to visit patients.
- There are no age restrictions for visitors of adult and pediatric hospital patients. No visitors under age 5 are allowed for neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) patients or adult blood and marrow transplant patients.
-
Children (under age 18) accompanying an adult to the hospital or clinic must remain with the adult at all times; children cannot stay in the waiting room alone.
- Patients with disabilities may have a designated support person and service animal accompany the patient, in addition to the allowed number of visitors. Family members, service providers or other people with knowledge about the needs of the person with a disability may serve as the designated support person.
- Visitation hours for inpatients are 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. Pediatric and obstetric patients do not have restricted visiting hours.
Adult Patients:
- There are no restrictions to the number of visitors allowed at a time for hospital, long-term acute care hospital (LTACH), and antepartum patients staying in a private or semi-private room. Patients on special precautions due to illness such as COVID-19 or Mpox are allowed one visitor at a time; the visitor should wear a medical mask at all times in the room.
- Two visitors at a time are allowed for emergency department patients. If the emergency department waiting room has a high number of individuals and social distancing becomes difficult, visitors may be asked to leave. Visitors for children under 18 and patients with disabilities may remain.
- Two visitors at a time, plus children of any age, are allowed for clinic appointments.
- Adult surgical and procedural patients can have two visitors throughout the surgery process. The two visitors may include children of any age; please note, children cannot stay in the waiting room alone.
- One or two visitors may attend a patient discharge meeting for hands-on training.
- Patients who are receiving infusions for cancer treatment and want to do cold capping are allowed to have one visitor, age 18 or older, to help them with the process.
Labor, Delivery, and Post-Partum Patients:
- No restrictions on the number of visitors allowed per day. Patients on special precautions due to illness such as COVID-19 or Mpox are allowed one visitor at a time; the visitor should wear a medical mask at all times in the room.
- No restrictions on the age of visitors.
- Visiting hours are not restricted. Professional doulas are allowed.
Children under 18:
- There are no restrictions to the number of visitors allowed at a time for patients at pediatric hospital, outpatient, or clinics facilities. Patients on special precautions due to illness such as COVID-19 or Mpox are allowed one visitor at a time; the visitor should wear a medical mask at all times in the room.
- Three visitors at a time, ages 5 and older, are allowed for NICU patients (4 total per day).
- For families with twins or multiples in the NICU: If one twin/multiple remains in the hospital and the other has been discharged, the discharged sibling is allowed to visit with parents if the remaining patient is in a private room.

MASKING AND SAFETY
Respiratory illness cases are expected to rise across the state and country this winter. Masks are strongly encouraged at our hospitals and clinics for patients and visitors. Some high-risk units within our hospitals may require masking for patients and visitors. Staff are currently required to mask in patient care areas. Our goal is to decrease the transmission of respiratory illnesses and to keep staff, patients, and visitors safe.
Patients and visitors are welcome to wear a mask at any time. Following our guiding principle of Respect for People, anyone asked to mask by a patient, visitor, or staff should honor this request.
Help prevent the spread of germs that can make you and others sick.
COVER YOUR COUGH
Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue or your upper sleeve. Please put on a mask if you have a fever, cough, or cold symptoms.
CLEAN YOUR HANDS
Wash your hands with soap and warm water for 15 seconds or clean them with alcohol hand sanitizer when you arrive and before you leave.
VISITORS, STAY HOME IF YOU’RE SICK
Visitors who feel sick or who have a fever, rash, or have been exposed to a respiratory illness like COVID or influenza cannot enter.
SERVICE ANIMALS
Trained service animals recognized under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) are allowed at M Health Fairview facilities. M Health Fairview staff may ask patients screening questions upon arrival to assess whether an animal meets the definition of an ADA service animal. Service animals are expected to be clean, healthy, and controlled by their owners during their visit. Family pets and emotional support animals are not allowed at M Health Fairview facilities unless approved in advance by the patient's care team and infection prevention personnel. Please contact your care team with questions.
DELIVERIES FOR PATIENTS AND PERMITTED VISITORS
Food, flowers, and gift deliveries are allowed at our hospitals. In addition, permitted visitors can bring food, flowers, or gifts with them when they visit. Please note, items such as flowers are not allowed on some of our units. Please check with care staff if you are unsure if a unit has restrictions. Family members may drop off essential items for patients such as glasses, hearing aids, computers, phones, chargers, and clothes at any time.
