Atrial Fibrillation
Overview
Atrial fibrillation is caused by a disorder in your heart’s electrical system, which controls the heart’s rate and rhythm. It can cause anxiety, fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness and more serious conditions, such as stroke, heart attack or heart failure. Your physician will diagnose atrial fibrillation with a physical exam and an electrocardiogram (EKG).
Our approach
Electrophysiologists are specialists trained in diagnosing and treating problems with the heart’s electrical system. At the M Health Fairview, our Heart Care experts are known for their innovative approaches to diagnosing and treating even the most complex heart rhythm disorders. Electrophysiologists work with a team of many specialists, including cardiologists, surgeons, nurses, and other medical experts to determine the best option for you.
In 2016, we established the M Health Atrial Fibrillation Center to provide comprehensive care to our patients at eight locations. Led by Lin Yee Chen, MD, and Huagui Li, MD, this center leverages our research to provide our patients with care ranging from medication management to catheter ablation, implantable devices, or surgery.
Throughout the years, we have pioneered many advances in heart care. University of Minnesota physicians implanted the first cardiac pacemaker in the 1950s; provided the first wearable, transistorized pacemaker to a young boy in the 1960s and were involved in the first bi-ventricular pacemakers and defibrillators in the 1990s. They also have been at the leading edge of technology involving catheters and resynchronization therapy to help both chambers of the heart beat together efficiently.
