Pediatric Growth Disorders
Overview
If your child is not gaining weight or height at the same rate as others the same age, he or she may have a growth disorder. A child whose height is below the bottom of the growth curve as measured by your physician may have a growth disorder. This may be due to medical conditions, such as genetic disorders, hormone imbalances, disorders of the brain or central nervous system, feeding difficulties, heart or lung problems, blood disorders, chronic infections, and many others. Environmental factors can also play a role, including loss of emotional bonding between parent and child, and poor eating habits. If the condition is diagnosed and treated early, normal growth and development can be achieved.
Our approach
Our pediatric endocrinologists are experts in the diagnosis and treatment of common growth disorders, many of which are due to endocrine disorders. The University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital endocrine disorder specialists are pioneers in studying endocrine disorders affecting growth and pubertal development. We had the first comprehensive, multidisciplinary program in Minnesota to diagnose and treat children with Congenital Adrenal Hyperplasia (CAH). This program partners with the Department of Health, other centers in Minnesota and the Midwest to provide new research that helps change the care of children with CAH.
We are involved in numerous clinical trials aimed at developing new and better therapies for children with disorders of growth and precocious puberty. Our multidisciplinary team works together to evaluate, diagnose, and treat a wide range of growth disorders and will provide unique care options to meet the needs of your child.
