Guillain-Barré Syndrome and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)
Guillain-Barré Syndrome and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP)
Overview
Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and Chronic Inflammatory Demyelinating Polyneuropathy (CIDP) are rare autoimmune disorders that cause your immune system to attack your peripheral nervous system. When this happens, it is difficult for your nerves to transmit signals from your brain and spinal cord to the rest of your body. As a result most patients develop a combination of numbness and weakness in their arms and/or legs. These symptoms may impair the ability to perform common daily activities, like walking. Other symptoms that may be part of GBS and CIDP include pain, fatigue, tremor, facial weakness, double vision, or breathing difficulty.
Our approach
The GBS-CIDP Foundation International has designated M Health Fairview as a “Center of Excellence” for the diagnosis and treatment of Guillain-Barré Syndrome and CIDP. We also specialize in the related autoimmune neuropathies Multifocal Motor Neuropathy (MMN) and anti-MAG polyneuropathy.
Like many rare diseases, CIDP, GBS, and related neuropathies can be challenging to diagnosis and treat. Our diagnostic approach is to use a litany of tools to arrive at an expeditious and accurate diagnosis. At our disposal includes laboratory services, genetic testing, nerve conduction studies/EMG, imaging (MRI and ultrasound), skin biopsy, and nerve and muscle biopsy. Our treatment approach is rooted in evidence based treatment guidelines, but also is careful to take into account the uniqueness of each individual person.
When needed, we have access to a multidisciplinary team of specialist that may include physical therapist, social workers, and pain management specialist to round out the treatment approach. M Health Fairview frequently participates in CIDP and GBS clinical trials. Interested patients have access to clinicians with knowledge on the latest in CIDP and GBS research, from ongoing clinical trials to innovations in early development.
