Infertility
Overview
Infertility is the condition where you can’t get pregnant after a set period trying to conceive. That set period varies based on your age and other factors.
There are several types of infertility:
- Primary infertility: This is when a person has never been pregnant and can’t conceive after at least six months (for those over the age of 35) or 12 months (for those under the age of 35) of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse.
- Secondary infertility: This is when a person has had at least one successful pregnancy but can’t get pregnant again.
- Individuals and couples who require medical assistance to conceive.
Infertility is very common. About 20% of women aged 15-49 struggle with primary infertility, and 5% of women aged 15-49 struggle with secondary infertility.
There are many causes of infertility, and a healthcare provider may determine that several types of treatment are necessary, from lifestyle modification to medications or surgery. A provider can also offer tips for conceiving, such as methods of tracking ovulation.
Our approach
At M Health Fairview, our providers are trained in the most current infertility treatments. We understand your concerns and desire to start or build your family, and we take a full view of your health in trying to determine what is causing infertility.
Many people who are trying to conceive will use one or more forms of assisted reproductive technology (ART). ART is defined as a fertility treatment where a healthcare provider handles the sperm or egg, such as:
- In vitro fertilization (IVF). IVF is where a provider will retrieve eggs from the ovary, placing them with sperm for fertilization in a lab dish. A provider then transfers the fertilized egg(s) into the uterus.
- Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). ICSI is where a provider injects a single sperm directly into each retrieved egg for fertilization, and then that fertilized egg is transferred into the uterus.
- Intrauterine insemination (IUI). IUI is where a provider uses a long, thin tube to place sperm into the uterus for fertilization.
- Assisted hatching. Assisted hatching is where the outer layer of an embryo is slightly opened into order to facilitate implantation into the uterine lining.
- Third-party ART. This is when the fertility journey involves donor sperm, eggs, or embryos, or surrogacy.
As part of a system of experts, our infertility providers have access to specialists in many other areas. Should it be necessary, they can refer you to another specialist for concurrent treatment.
