Lipids are fats found in your blood. High levels of lipids, such as cholesterol or triglycerides, can have a profound effect on your overall health.

Overview

These lipid disorders can increase your risk for heart attack, stroke, and other atherosclerotic disease. Early detection and treatment of lipid disease can reduce your risk for cardiovascular disease.

Our approach

Providers at the lipid treatment program of M Health Fairview Heart Care are highly specialized in providing tailored care for patients with lipid disorders. We understand that treating lipid disorders means more than lowering cholesterol levels; it may include changes to your diet or medications, depending on your needs. In addition to expert care, you may have access to new therapies through clinical trials during your course of treatment.

Common lipid disorders are:

  • High cholesterol (hypercholesterolemia)
  • High lipid levels (dyslipidemia)
  • Low lipid levels (hypolipidemia)

We most commonly treat people who have one of the following:

  • A family history of early cardiovascular disease
  • A medical history of organ transplant (their medications affect their lipid profiles)
  • Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) since a side effect of their medications is hardening of the arteries
  • Statin intolerance
  • High triglycerides and low LDL cholesterol

You may be especially interested in seeing a lipid specialist if high cholesterol or early heart disease runs in your family, and the whole family can be treated within the M Health Fairview system. Our lipid experts at M Health Fairview Health Care partner with the Preventive Cardiology Program at University of Minnesota Masonic Children’s Hospital. This unique partnership, the only one of its kind in the Midwest, allows children to transition from the pediatric to the adult program, if needed. We have found that a family-centered approach results in the best outcomes for patients.
