Myasthenia gravis (MG) is a chronic autoimmune disorder in which antibodies destroy the communication between nerves and muscle, resulting in weakness of the skeletal muscles.

Overview

Although the disease may affect any age and any gender, it tends to be more common in young women (age 20 and 30) and men aged 50 and older. Weakness commonly affects the muscles that control the eyes, mouth, and limbs. More severely affected patients have involvement in the muscles that control swallowing or breathing.

Although the cause of myasthenia gravis is unknown and there is no cure, many treatments are available that can minimize the impact that the disease has on a person’s daily activities.

Our approach

Early detection is one important key to successfully managing MG. Our diagnostic approach is to use a litany of tools to arrive at an expeditious and accurate diagnosis. At our disposal includes laboratory services, genetic testing, nerve conduction studies/EMG, imaging (MRI and ultrasound), and nerve and muscle biopsy.

Our treatment approach is rooted in evidence based treatment guidelines, but also is careful to take into account the uniqueness of each individual person. When needed, we have access to a multidisciplinary team of specialist that may include cardiothoracic surgery, ophthalmology, physical therapy, and social workers to round out the treatment approach.

M Health Fairview frequently participates in Myasthenia gravis clinical trials. Interested patients have access to clinicians with knowledge on the latest in MG, from ongoing clinical trials to innovations in early development.
