The plantar fascia is the band of connective tissue that runs along the bottom of your foot and connects your heel bone to your toes, holding your foot bones in an arched position. "Plantar" refers to the bottom of the foot.
Plantar fasciitis develops when this tissue becomes strained and inflamed. It's not uncommon for a bone spur to develop where the plantar fascia attaches to the heel. One of the most common orthopedic foot ailments, this painful condition is common among runners or athletes who do repetitive jumping. The inflammation may be worsened by shoes that lack proper arch support and by repeated irritation that comes with an athletic lifestyle.
