Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is one of the most common hormonal disorders in women. The cause is unknown, but it often runs in a family.

Overview

PCOS is the result of an imbalance in the hormones which control ovulation and metabolism and is characterized by the presence of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the ovaries. The word “syndrome” indicates that it is associated with a variety of symptoms which vary in different women. Symptoms and signs include menstrual irregularities, weight gain, insulin resistance, patches of dark skin, acne, abnormal hair growth, enlarged ovaries filled with fluid, increased stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. PCOS is most commonly diagnosed in women in their 20s or 30s.

Our approach

Our physicians with M Health Fairview offer premium care in gynecology and related specialties. We offer the latest in medical care and procedures plus access to integrative services such as nutrition counseling, acupuncture, and complementary medicine.

If you have symptoms of PCOS, your physician may perform tests to rule out other conditions that may be causing your symptoms. Tests might include a physical exam, pelvic ultrasound, and blood tests to analyze hormone, glucose, or lipid levels.

With treatment, women with PCOS are often able to get pregnant. These women may be at greater risk of miscarriage, gestational diabetes, and high blood pressure.

Early diagnosis and treatment of PCOS may reduce your chances of experiencing longer-term complications.
