PCOS is the result of an imbalance in the hormones which control ovulation and metabolism and is characterized by the presence of numerous fluid-filled cysts in the ovaries. The word “syndrome” indicates that it is associated with a variety of symptoms which vary in different women. Symptoms and signs include menstrual irregularities, weight gain, insulin resistance, patches of dark skin, acne, abnormal hair growth, enlarged ovaries filled with fluid, increased stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. PCOS is most commonly diagnosed in women in their 20s or 30s.

If you have symptoms of PCOS, your physician may perform tests to rule out other conditions that may be causing your symptoms. Tests might include a physical exam, pelvic ultrasound, and blood tests to analyze hormone, glucose, or lipid levels.
With treatment, women with PCOS are often able to get pregnant. These women may be at greater risk of miscarriage, gestational diabetes, and high blood pressure.
