If you have a loss of bladder control, either mild leaking or uncontrolled wetting, you have urinary incontinence.

Overview

There are two main kinds of urinary incontinence. Stress incontinence occurs when the muscles that keep your bladder closed are weak. You may leak urine when you sneeze, laugh, or lift a heavy object. If, however, your bladder muscles are too active, you may feel a strong urge to urinate even when you have little urine in your bladder. This is called urge incontinence or overactive bladder. Overflow incontinence occurs when your bladder doesn’t empty completely, causing it to become very full. When this happens, urine may leak out in small amounts, and your bladder may never feel empty. Incontinence can also be caused by conditions such as prostate disorders and nerve damage. Urinary incontinence is not a normal part of growing old. Treatment options exist that can help you improve your quality of life.
