Structural Heart Care at M Health Fairview
Structural heart disease is a general term used to describe conditions that impact the structures of your heart including the valves, chambers, walls, and muscles. These conditions can be congenital, meaning you are born with them, or they may develop over time. The most common type of structural heart disease is heart valve disease, a problem with one of the four valves in your heart. Heart valves open and close to ensure blood flows the correct way. Structural heart disease ranges in its severity. While some conditions can be treated with medication and monitoring, others may require a procedure to fix. Regardless of the treatment method, a structural heart specialist should be involved in your care.

Frequently Asked Questions
Historically, the only way to repair or replace heart valves or structures in the heart was with open heart surgery. Luckily today, we have other less invasive options. All the procedures listed above are catheter-based procedures, meaning they are minimally invasive, allowing for a shorter hospital stay and easier recovery. During a transcatheter procedure your doctor will make a small puncture in an artery or vein and use equipment guided through that catheter to repair or replace the damaged structure in your heart.
