Why M Health Fairview?
A non surgical focus
In caring for back and spine conditions, it is particularly important to progress through options in a deliberate, comprehensive manner. Most cases of back pain can be successfully treated without surgery. The core of our team is made up of physical medicine, rehabilitation, and pain management specialists who can accurately diagnose your condition, then work with you to develop a conservative, comprehensive care plan centered on non-surgical intervention and therapy.
The top technology
We are one of the few programs in Minnesota to offer a low-radiation EOS imaging system that produces a CT scan of the spine and hips in a standing position for proper evaluation. Our surgical teams have access to Mazor X robotic systems, interoperative MRI, and the latest neuronavigation systems for image-guided surgery, allowing for minimally invasive techniques and a level of precision that improves outcomes and speeds recovery. Our physical therapists help patients to restore strength and range of motion through MedX clinical rehabilitation equipment, which isolates and strengthens muscle groups supporting the spine, and to optimize rehabilitation and improve recovery times through AlterG anti-gravity treadmills.

This depends on both insurance coverage and the provider’s specialty. In general, patients do not need a referral to see non-surgical medical spine physicians or advance practice providers who can diagnose and treat spinal issues or back pain. These highly trained providers – who specialize in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine or Pain Management – collaborate with patients to develop individualized care plans based on nonoperative approaches and patient objectives.
Insurance plans commonly require referrals for evaluation by a surgeon and completion of conservative treatment prior to advanced imaging or non-surgical procedures. Please check with your insurer about such requirements.
For most patients with one of these conditions, surgery isn’t required. Back pain will often resolve with non-surgical, conservative care including physical therapy, manual therapy, pharmacology, behavioral health care and weight management. Our interventional spine physicians are skilled in the most up-to-date treatments and technologies, including radiofrequency ablation (RFA), epidural steroid injections, nerve blocks and spinal cord stimulators. The M Health Fairview Spine Program is unique in offering all of these care options within one system.
Other patients are better fits for our specialized spine physical therapy program. M Health Fairview Rehabilitation Services prioritizes patient satisfaction: from quality, cost-effective care to convenient locations and coordinated scheduling. Our physical therapists leverage their advanced training in spine care to develop care plans that fit each patient’s needs.
Yes. As an academic health care system with regionally and nationally recognized physicians, patients often turn to M Health Fairview for second opinions. Our clinical support team works with patients to ensure all necessary clinical information is available prior to their visit. Upon review, there may be instances when a physician suggests that the patient sees a more appropriate specialist.
If your condition ends up requiring surgery, you can trust the expertise and specialization of our multidisciplinary team of orthopedic and spinal surgeons. We also specialize in pediatric spine care and in treating scoliosis/spine deformity and spinal tumors, among many other conditions.
