Frequently Asked Questions
This depends on both insurance coverage and the provider’s specialty. In general, patients do not need a referral to see non-surgical vascular physicians or advance practice providers who can diagnose and treat vascular issues. These highly trained providers – who specialize in vascular care – collaborate with patients to develop individualized care plans.
Insurance plans commonly require referrals for evaluation by a surgeon and completion of conservative treatment prior to advanced imaging or non-surgical procedures. Please check with your insurer about such requirements.
Vascular disease is often silent and without symptoms. Early detection and prevention can improve your quality of life and may even save it. M Health Fairview offers vascular disease screening in a nationally accredited vascular lab. A complete screening is painless and takes less than an hour. All tests are performed non-invasively (no needles).
Your family history, symptoms, medications, and other risk factors all help in diagnosing a vascular disease. Several tests and imaging can also be used to provide your doctor with a clear picture of your cardiovascular health.
Although vascular disease is common, every patient’s situation is unique. How do you know that the treatment plan your doctor developed is the best one for your specific case? One way to know is to seek a second opinion from another physician.
Second opinions are a common practice in vascular care, and almost all doctors welcome another doctor’s viewpoint. In fact, some health systems use a multidisciplinary team approach, where a group of experts from relevant specialties come together in real time to consider each patient’s case and determine the best course of treatment for that individual.
Second opinion consultations can help you feel confident that you’re getting the best possible treatment, and they are covered by many health insurance plans, too. To find out how to get a second opinion, talk with your doctor or care coordinator.
Providers at M Health Fairview are in-network on many insurance plans. Whether you’re thinking about changing doctors or seeking care from a specialist, we know it’s important to find a provider who understands your needs – and one who is covered under your health insurance plan.
Insurance coverage may change what services and providers are covered throughout the year. Before scheduling an appointment, we strongly recommend you contact your health plan to verify that the location or provider you plan to visit is included in your network. Your health plan will also be able to inform you of any co-payments, deductibles, or other out-of-pocket costs that will be your responsibility.
Unlike most other hospitals and health systems, academic-driven health systems are connected to a university, and particularly to a medical school. This type of organization offers several benefits when it comes to treating vascular disease.
Academic health systems are the first institutions to benefit from cutting-edge clinical research as it moves from the lab to the bedside. In many cases, academic programs are large enough to support a wide range of vascular specialists. They typically have invested in state-of-the-art equipment that enables them to lead the way at the forefront of medical and surgical technology. These institutions are also the training grounds for the next generation of vascular doctors through medical residence and subspecialty fellowship programs.
