Heart Imaging and Diagnostic
Overview
Cardiovascular imaging provides noninvasive views of the heart and vessels with minimal risk to patients. Its technologies include echocardiography (ultrasound), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT), positron emission tomography (PET), and nuclear imaging.
Cardiovascular imaging serves as the backbone for evaluation of all cardiovascular patients by providing:
- Early, accurate diagnosis
- Lowest risk imaging tests to help avoid risky invasive procedures
- Evaluation of success of treatment and follow-up
- Critical support for groundbreaking programs such as structural heart, TAVR, ablation, heart failure, and transplant programs
- Support for well-established programs like cardiomyopathy, pulmonary hypertension, valvular heart disease, prevention, adult congenital, vascular, and high-risk surgical programs
In addition to helping in the diagnoses of patients suspected of having heart disease, imaging is an integral part of current cardiovascular research.
Our approach
Strong collaboration with the University of Minnesota and the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research made our facility the first in the world to image human hearts at 7 Tesla (7T) high field magnetic strength.
Continuing work in this area is expected to help us discover the intricate biological mechanisms of the healthy and diseased heart muscle and high-risk characteristics of atherosclerotic plaques. Active work is currently ongoing with a focus on cardiac involvement in muscular dystrophy.
