Irregular sleep habits, shift work, and sleep disorders can all create serious problems. Weight gain, diabetes, mood disturbances, higher mortality, and driving problems are all linked to poor sleep.

Untreated sleep apnea can contribute to serious health problems such as high blood pressure, heart disease, diabetes, weight gain, and stroke. The bottom line is that both your brain and your body need sufficient sleep to function well.

We offer comprehensive, innovative care for adults and children with unusual sleep behaviors or sleep disorders.

Our Approach

Our sleep specialists conduct research and identify improved sleep treatments. Sleep apnea, a potentially dangerous condition in which you stop breathing for a time during sleep is commonly treated with the CPAP machine. The machine delivers air pressure through a mask placed over your nose and mouth while you sleep. We were the first in the country to remotely monitor patient data from CPAP home use and adjust their therapy.

A M Health Fairview team was the first in the Twin Cities to successfully implant an upper airway stimulation therapy, an innovative treatment option that targets the nerves that control the muscles of your airway.

Conditions We Treat

Our sleep specialists offer sleep consultations and studies, ranging from the very common to the complex, including:

Treatments, Tests, and Procedures

Start with a sleep evaluation As part of a sleep consultation, a sleep specialist will talk to you in detail to determine and review your sleep habits. To better define your problem, you may be asked to complete a sleep diary or wear a home-monitoring device while sleeping. In some instances, a sleep study may be recommended. Sleep diagnostic studies include overnight testing as well as home studies for sleep apnea. If you do not have serious medical conditions and you have loud snoring, interrupted breathing at night and tiredness during the day, a home sleep test for sleep apnea may be needed. To get started, take an online assessment or make an appointment with a sleep specialist.

Upper Airway Stimulation Treatment (Inspire Therapy)

Inspire therapy is for people with moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea who are not receiving consistent benefits from CPAP devices. Before your physician recommends Inspire therapy, you will be asked to participate in a sleep study.

Vagus Nerve Stimulation

A small pulse generator similar to a pacemaker is implanted under the skin of your chest and connected to a wire that is attached to your vagus nerve. The device delivers mild electrical signals along the nerve, which then sends signals to other areas of the brain to interrupt the seizure.
