Overview
As the only Maternal-Fetal specialists in the region associated with an academic medical center, our specialists bring their own expertise as well as collaboration with neonatologists, geneticists, and other M Health Fairview specialists to provide the highest level of care for patients and their babies — from preconception to post-partum.
Our approach
Our Maternal-Fetal Medicine Centers provide innovative, comprehensive, and interdisciplinary care for patients. We collaborate with many specialists in this care, based on the unique circumstances of each patient and their unborn baby.
As part of an academic health center, our doctors are at the forefront of the field and don't just meet the standard of care, they set the standard. They read—and write—the newest literature and train the next generation of physicians, so they have the most up-to-date knowledge. Many of our physicians serve on the boards that certify maternal-fetal medicine specialists. The result is that you will receive the highest level of medical care. All our physicians and genetic counselors are board certified.
Our compassionate, caring approach means our staff takes the time to listen to your concerns, and fully explain your condition and treatment options. Our physicians regularly collaborate with other sub-specialists, such as cardiologists, radiologists, neonatologists, social workers, and more, to discuss patient care and treatments. Your care team is assembled for you specifically, based on your specific diagnosis and care plan, so you've got a team of experts and caregivers that surround you.
Genetics Expertise
We offer reproductive genetics consultation by certified genetic counselors who specialize in the field and board-certified Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists. Our experts are highly experienced in both high-risk pregnancies and clinical genetics. We help patients understand the options for genetic testing and screening, interpret the results and prepare an individualized care plan. We use the most advanced fetal ultrasound capabilities to screen for genetic markers and the latest testing methods available including the newer non-invasive prenatal screening (NIPS) that isolates fetal genetic material from the mother's blood.
Genetic screening and expert consultation provide the opportunity to process information and consider all options. It may also be the opportunity to prepare for the specific needs of the new baby.
In some cases, patients undergo genetic screening with their primary physician, and when the results show an increased risk for a genetic difference, our experts can help with further testing and treatment, both before the baby is born and after.
An integral part of University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists are closely aligned with the Neonatologists in our Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and the appropriate pediatric sub-specialists.
Fetal Diagnosis and Treatment Center
FDTC offers complete maternal and fetal care for pregnancies with a known or possible fetal health concern. Our goal is to give patients as many details as possible about pregnancy and treatment options. We create a custom team of caring experts based on each patient's unique needs. We see many different pregnancy complications in the FDTC and have multiple specialists who are part of our care teams. Depending on the need, care team membership may change or grow over time.
We help plan care during pregnancy and for the baby after delivery. Our hospital includes a Level IV NICU, offering the highest level of neonatal care available. Care at the FDTC may range from a one-time visit to complete prenatal care and delivery.
We understand the challenges of high-risk pregnancy and ensure that our care meets every patient's medical, emotional and spiritual needs. To this end, patients are assigned a care coordinator to help harmonize care at every stage and ensure patients understand their care plan and have the support they need.
Perinatal Assessment Center
Our PAC is dedicated to caring for those experiencing a pregnancy-related condition or high-risk pregnancy. Focusing on issues from the common to the complex, our emphasis is on the unique needs of pregnant people. Patients at the PAC may visit our centers just once for consultation or have a series of visits as part of an assessment to assist their referring care team. After the assessment, patients may return to their own clinic or transfer their ongoing care to our PAC, depending on their care needs.
Cardio-Obstetrics Program
The M Health Fairview Cardio-Obstetrics program seeks to establish a uniquely multidisciplinary program dedicated to improving the health of patients of reproductive age throughout the perinatal period, with a tripartite mission focused on clinical excellence, pioneering education, and innovative research. Cardiovascular concerns while pregnant are the leading cause of morbidity and mortality – our Cardio-Obstetrics program is uniquely designed to mitigate risk for our patients.
The program serves as a multidisciplinary collaboration between adult cardiologists, maternal-fetal medicine specialists, anesthesiologists, and dedicated nurse coordinators. We care for pregnant patients with complex cardiovascular concerns across their reproductive lifespan, from pre-conception through pregnancy and postpartum, in hospital and clinic settings. Our specialists will also work closely with each patient's local obstetrician and cardiologists, to provide the best recommended and individualized care pathway.
Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic: Joint MFM and Nephrology Consultation
M Health Fairview's Chronic Kidney Disease Clinic is a multidisciplinary clinic that involves both Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Nephrology specialists to provide high-quality, evidence-based, and patient-centered care to reproductive-age patients with kidney disease who are considering pregnancy or who are currently pregnant.
Pre-conception counseling and optimization of kidney disease will help better prepare patients to optimize pregnancy outcomes. Patients will thereafter continue to partner with this multidisciplinary clinic throughout their pregnancy to reach the common goal of both a healthy patient and baby.
Inflammatory Bowel Disease Pre-conception and Pregnancy Planning Clinic (IPREPP Clinic)
At our IPREPP Clinic, we offer a multidisciplinary clinic that combines the expertise of Gastroenterology and Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialists. Our IPREPP Clinic is the only one of its kind in the Midwest and one of only a few in the world that offer this type of expertise and counseling for pre-conception and pregnant people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD).
Patients often feel uncertain on how to treat their IBD during pregnancy, or while trying to become pregnant. At our IPREPP Clinic, patients will see a gastroenterologist who specializes in treating patients with IBD prior to conception and during pregnancy, in conjunction with a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist. The team will jointly formulate a plan of care to optimize both maternal and fetal health.
