Pediatric hematologists treat noncancerous blood disorders like sickle cell disease, hemophilia, anemia, or other bleeding and clotting issues. Because these diseases can have a wide range of effects on the body’s systems and organs, pediatric hematologists often partner with a team of doctors and other care providers from a variety of areas. That team may include hematologist/oncologists, blood and marrow transplant physicians, pain management experts, nurses, child life specialists, social workers, mental health providers, nutritionists, integrative care specialists, and others, depending on your child’s needs. Together, they work together seamlessly to ensure that each child and family receives comprehensive care molded to their personal journey.

Children, adolescents, and adults in our program benefit from a whole-child lifetime approach to care. For example, we are the only health system in Minnesota to offer both pediatric and adult care for sickle cell disease. This means the same providers can care for your child at every age and stage. And as your child enters adulthood, there’s no need to find a new doctor or team. To make things even easier, children with blood disorders are seen in a pediatric specialty clinic equipped with its own laboratory so testing and treatment are as convenient as possible. When needed, inpatient care is also available at M Health Fairview Masonic Children’s Hospital.

As a child ages, we are able to help transition care into the Center for Bleeding and Clotting Disorders at M Health Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center, which has been at the forefront of care for sickle cell disease, hemophilia, and other disorders since 1977. Because we see both children and adults, a family with inherited disorders can stay together in one system for coordinated treatment.

Our pediatric hematology program also intersects with many interdisciplinary programs within our health system that are focused on specific types of disorders. Our program is closely related to our pediatric Rare Disease and blood and marrow transplant (BMT) programs in the treatment of Fanconi anemia, a rare disease which is often treated with a BMT. The Kidz1stFund Comprehensive Fanconi Anemia Center is the largest treatment center in the United States for patients with Fanconi anemia.

We are also advancing the care of patients with sickle cell disease and continue to grow our dedicated sickle cell programs for adults and children, reaching more and more patients each year with help and hope for this chronic, painful condition.
