Pediatric hematologist/oncologists are doctors with special training to diagnose and treat blood cancers, like leukemia or lymphoma, in children of all ages. Pediatric hematologist/oncologists primarily treat blood cancers using medications like chemotherapy, immunotherapy, or targeted therapy. They may also partner with a blood and marrow transplant (BMT) physician to provide a blood and marrow transplant.

After a cancer diagnosis, a hematologist/oncologist will partner with your family to explain the diagnosis and discuss options with you, before creating a treatment plan tailored to your child’s unique needs, dreams, and goals. Once a plan is in place, they will manage the treatment and monitor its effect on your child’s cancer, making adjustments if needed to ensure success. They will also help your child cope with side effects of treatment, like pain, nausea, or fatigue.

Our pediatric hematologist/oncologists are often at the center of a multidisciplinary team of doctors and other care providers from a variety of areas. That team may include oncology nurses, Child and Family Life Specialists, social workers, mental health providers, nutritionists, spiritual support, and integrative care specialists. They work together seamlessly to ensure that each child and family comprehensive care molded to their personal journey.

After treatment, our team also brings specialized follow-up care to children and families through our Childhood Cancer Survivor Program. We can help your child navigate long-term physical and emotional side effects of treatment (known as late effects), educate them so they can maintain a healthy, active life, schedule follow-up screenings and, eventually, make the transition to adulthood and age-appropriate care.
