Pediatric Obesity Medicine
Overview
Achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is a challenge for many of us, including young people of all ages. That’s because carrying extra weight is much more than “calories in, and calories out.” The weight management team with M Health Fairview Pediatrics offers a variety of treatment options that will fit your child or teenager’s unique situation so that they can achieve their best health.
We have been caring for children and adolescents who carry extra weight for more than 15 years, using the best evidence-based approaches available. These effective treatment options for children and adolescents may include lifestyle therapy, weight loss medications, or weight loss (bariatric) surgery. Our mission is to promote your child’s whole person health by focusing on their physical, emotional, and mental well-being.
Our approach
M Health Fairview Pediatrics offers Minnesota’s premier pediatric weight management program for young people who struggle with extra weight. Our pediatric obesity medicine specialists understand that there are unique factors causing your child to carry extra weight, and we will provide a treatment plan tailored to your child’s specific needs.
They will receive individualized, comprehensive, compassionate, and child-centered care from our multidisciplinary team, consisting of pediatricians, nurse practitioners, dieticians, physical therapists, nurses, and psychologists who specialize in pediatric obesity. The team uses up-to-date, research-backed methods to diagnose and solve weight management challenges. Our goal is to help your child or teen achieve and maintain a healthy weight and prevent, identify, and treat weight-related health problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol.
Childhood obesity is a complex issue, and we understand that there is more to losing weight than eating less and exercising more. We dig deep to identify the factors that are affecting your child’s weight. Some examples of these factors may include genetics, emotional eating, or poor food environment. The types of treatments we offer are:
- Behavioral counseling
- Nutritional support and dietary interventions
- Physical activity support and physical therapy
- Medication for weight management
- Weight loss (bariatric) surgery
- Assessment and management of weight-related health problems
Good mental health is essential for successful weight management. We offer mental health counseling to help you and your family adjust to new treatments. Our weight management team is sensitive to your child or teen’s feelings and will help guide and encourage them throughout their treatment process. If your child needs more intensive mental health treatment, we will facilitate and help them get the care they need.
In addition to providing treatment, we are strong advocates in the medical community for young people with obesity, so that care delivery is improved for youth. We’re helping to change policies to address the inequities associated with obesity, many of which stem from weight bias and stigma. We believe that all children deserve the opportunity to live healthy, active lives. Our treatment team is also nationally and internationally recognized as one of the best programs for pediatric obesity, leading the way in researching effective treatments and educating other health care providers around the country and the world.
If your child or adolescent needs treatment and support to reach a healthy weight, our program can help them lose weight and reduce the risks of weight-related problems. We are committed to providing kids in our community with effective, evidence-based options that will help them realize their hopes, dreams, and wishes for the future.
