We’re the site of innovative treatments, research studies, and clinical trials with our trailblazing researchers investigating new frontiers in stem cell therapy and immunotherapy.

What We Do

At University of Minnesota Masonic Children's Hospital, we perform the two main types of stem cell transplant:

• Autologous transplant – uses the body’s own stem cells and typically only used for patients with solid organ cancers

• Allogeneic transplant – uses well-matched stem cells from another person. As above, allogeneic stem cell transplant can be completed with stem cells from one of many sources: bone marrow, peripheral blood or umbilical cord blood. An ideal match may be found by testing close relatives of the patient (related donor) or from a volunteer unrelated to the patient (unrelated donor).

We care for patients with blood cancers, including leukemia and lymphoma, as well as solid organ cancers. We specialize in caring for patients with rare, devastating diseases like epidermolysis bullosa, Hurler syndrome, adrenoleukodystrophy, and Fanconi anemia.

We provide transplant to patients with immune deficiencies and red blood cell disorders, like sickle cell disease and thalassemia. We are also one of the world’s largest umbilical cord blood transplant centers.

In addition to stem cell transplant, we provide cutting edge gene therapy trials for several of these disorders as well.

We also offer an extensive, long-term follow-up program for survivors of childhood cancers. We provide risk-based evaluation, monitoring, and care in the years following transplant with your child’s unique needs in mind. Referral email DEPT-BMT-PEDS-REFERRALS@fairview.org
