Endoscopic bariatric therapy includes more minimally invasive methods that can be very successful in helping patients lose weight.
Endoscopic Bariatric Therapy
Overview
Endoscopic bariatric therapy (EBT) involves using an endoscope, which is a thin, flexible tube with a camera attached at the end, to insert devices or administer weight loss treatment through the gastrointestinal tract. This may mean restricting the size of the stomach or altering gut hormones to enhance feeling of fullness.
Endoscopic bariatric therapies have become an alternative to traditional invasive bariatric surgeries due to their improved efficacy, safety, and cost-effectiveness.
Types of EBT include:
- Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty (ESG). This procedure involves using an endoscope with a suturing device to create folds in your stomach wall, shrinking the stomach and allowing you to eat less while feeling full.
- Intragastric balloon (IGB). In this procedure, a silicone balloon is placed in your stomach and filled with saline. It takes up space in your stomach, helping you feel fuller without eating as much. It is removed six months after insertion.
- Gastric bypass revision, also called transoral outlet reduction (TOR). This tightens the size of the gastric outlet, helping you feel more full after eating so you can reduce your calorie intake.
- Aspiration therapy. Aspiration therapy involves placing a small tube in your stomach that connects to a port in your abdomen. This allows you to remove a portion of your meals through the tube after you eat, reducing your calorie intake.
EBT is a great tool for some patients, particularly those with a body mass index of 30 or greater, or patients who had bariatric surgery previously and have gained back weight. Specific patient health requirements may vary depending on which method you are considering.
