As the population ages, our surgeons are performing joint replacement surgeries more frequently. In fact, hip and knee replacement surgeries have become among the most common orthopedic procedures done today across the country. Your physician may recommend total joint replacement, in which the entire joint is removed and replaced with an artificial (prosthetic) joint, or partial joint replacement, where only the damaged portion of the joint is removed and replaced.

Some joint surgeries are done to repair, rather than replace, the damaged joint. This may be done, for example, by removing damaged tissue and using a surgical pin or a piece of bone taken from elsewhere in the body in its place.

Increasingly, our surgeons are performing joint surgery arthroscopically, using a scope that is inserted through a few small incisions. In some cases, they may recommend open surgery, which is done through one larger incision.
