The type of surgery you have depends on the extent of your meniscus tear. To determine the extent of the tear, your surgeon may rely on arthroscopy, which requires only small incisions in your knee. Your surgeon will insert a tiny camera in one incision to obtain a clear view of your knee joint. Miniature surgical instruments can be placed through other incisions to repair the tear.

For some tears, your surgeon will repair the meniscus, stitching together the torn edges so they heal properly. Fasteners may also be used to repair damage. In some cases, optimal repair may involve removing the damaged part of your meniscus. The surgeon will typically remove as little tissue as possible, since the meniscus won't completely grow back. Adjacent tissue, called the articular cartilage, will fulfill the role as shock absorber for your knee joint.
