Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI)
Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging (RUSI)
Overview
Rehabilitative ultrasound imaging (RUSI) is a non-invasive tool that trained physical therapists can use to visualize muscles and more accurately assess the origin of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction.
Our approach
RUSI is an evidence-based technique that can play a crucial role in improving a patient’s recovery by allowing physical therapists to observe muscle movements in real-time. Once the therapist can see specifically how the muscles are functioning, they are able to tailor treatments to specifically what the patient needs. The patient can also see how their muscles are working as they work on exercises.
The use of ultrasound to assess muscles and guide rehabilitation decision-making in physical therapy practice can be traced back to the late 1960s. RUSI has been found to be reliable and valid for the use of specific muscles during particular movements. There has been significant development of this technique during the last couple decades with increased use both by clinicians and researchers.
RUSI utilizes the same safe technology used for monitoring pregnancy, with specific settings to focus on the muscles and how they function. RUSI could be helpful with the treatment of many different conditions including pelvic floor dysfunction such as bowel and bladder incontinence, post-partum rehabilitation, abdominal pain or dysfunction, back pain, pelvic pain, hip and groin pain.
