If you have disabling seizures that cannot be reliably controlled using anti-seizure medications, surgery may be an option for regaining your quality of life. One surgical procedure for the treatment of temporal lobe epilepsy is selective amygdalohippocampectomy (SAH).
MINCEP was the first comprehensive epilepsy center in the United States. It has served as a model for epilepsy centers around the world since 1964.

Selective Amygdalohippocampectomy
Overview
This is an alternative to the most common surgery to treat seizures in adults, anterior temporal lobectomy. With selective amygdalohippocampectomy, neurosurgeons remove parts of the amygdala and most of the hippocampus. These two areas are deep in the temporal lobe. The hippocampus helps form new memories and the amygdala helps you process and remember emotional reactions. These areas don’t work well if seizures emerge from here so removing them usually does not cause impairment.

Your M Health Fairview MINCEP® Epilepsy Care team includes epileptologists, specially trained neurologists who focus on epilepsy and other seizure disorders, plus psychologists, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, nurse clinicians, pharmacists, neurologists, and neurosurgeons who are recognized nationally for their clinical research and innovative care. The MINCEP Epilepsy Care program has been designated a Level 4 Comprehensive Epilepsy Care Center in recognition of providing the highest level of complex evaluation, monitoring, and treatment.
Your medical team will conduct an extensive pre-surgical evaluation to make sure it is likely that the surgery will benefit you. Testing will include scans of the brain, recordings of the brain’s electrical activity and testing to determine what areas of your brain are associated with speech and memory.
